The JOLT-Barnet Council partnership represents a bold and future-facing approach to public-private collaboration, underpinned by challenge-led procurement. In response to Barnet’s Long Term Transport Strategy 2020-2041, the council leveraged its spending power to secure JOLT’s pioneering EV charging model, combining advertising with 25kW DC chargers. This innovative procurement approach secured £2 million of LEVI funding, maximising value for residents while generating income for Barnet. JOLT’s technology-driven approach aligns with Barnet’s strategic objectives by accelerating decarbonisation, improving air quality, enabling greater inclusion, and harnessing digital technologies.

Future-ready Cambridgeshire: Pioneering innovation enabled by digital connectivity

Cambridgeshire County Council, on behalf of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, is transforming the region through innovative digital infrastructure projects, addressing local challenges while contributing to Net Zero, economic prosperity, and inclusion. Key achievements in 2024 include the deployment of commercial small cells, a private 5G Open RAN network, development of an augmented reality experience, and enhanced mobile coverage analysis. Leveraging government and commercial funding, innovative procurement methods ensured efficiency and value. These projects showcase scalable solutions that reduce carbon footprints, create jobs, and support sustainable connectivity. Collaborating with tech providers, the council's setting a benchmark for future-focused place-based innovation.

Royal Hill Independent Living Service

Our development of the Royal Hill Independent Living Service is a first of it's kind in our borough, and is a trailblazing example of how homes for people with learning disabilities and/or autism can also live in state-of-the-art, net-zero homes, and how this also contributes to their wellbeing. We worked closely internally across teams and with partners to bring expertise into this project through commissioning the right developers and finding the right care providers.

One World Living Sustainable Neighbourhood Model

The London Councils Climate Unit: The One World Living theme, led by the London Borough of Harrow, created an engaging Sustainable Neighbourhood Model hosted on the London Councils website which visualizes a sustainable, circular economy, showcasing real life case studies to inspire London boroughs to act to reduce their consumption-base emissions. This interactive tool showcases a broad range of case studies from across London and has received enthusiastic feedback for its interactive elements and its role in promoting sustainability across the capital.

Heart of the city

Heart of the City is a council led, 1.5m square foot public private development with an investment value of £470m that uses a truly place-based approach to regeneration through partnership, innovative design, and sustainable development principles Connecting workspace, headquarters to start-up studios, a living mix of apartments and townhouses with streets and lanes lined with places to shop, eat and drink, socialise, browse and relax. This year has seen the completion of the development phase, resulting in a brilliant new city centre for Sheffield and one that the community has taken to its heart.

Staffordshire Warmer Homes

Lifting people out of fuel poverty and helping households with rocketing energy bills is a public health priority in Staffordshire. Our Staffordshire Warmer Homes Programme uses data to target vulnerable people most in need. This public, private and voluntary partnership is delivering outstanding results: • Securing £30m for heating and energy saving measures in more than 1000 homes • Reducing carbon emissions by nearly 3000 tonnes • Saving almost £1.5m from energy bills in thousands more homes This unique partnership shows the vital role public health also plays in addressing societal change.

The Sunspot Project: Transforming Jaywick Sands

The Sunspot project, led by Tendring District Council in partnership with Essex County Council, has transformed Jaywick Sands, Essex, by addressing local deprivation and fostering economic growth. This £5.2 million development includes 24 business units, a café, market hall, and community garden, all designed with sustainability in mind. Achieving 100% occupancy, Sunspot has created 48 jobs and supports local entrepreneurship. The project exemplifies innovative urban regeneration, overcoming challenges like material shortages and flood risks. Sunspot serves as a replicable model for other deprived areas, contributing to Net Zero carbon ambitions and enhancing community wellbeing.

Watford BC
The Green Loop – Turning vision into reality

The Green Loop in Watford is an innovative project that combines cutting-edge technology with community engagement. Central to its success is the Digital Twin, a 3D model of the town developed with Hertfordshire County Council and Digital Urban, which allowed residents to visualise the 6.5km walking and cycling route before its launch. Through virtual reality (VR) experiences, over 270 participants explored the route and its improvements, fostering excitement and ownership. Recognised with an RTPI Award for Excellence, the Digital Twin was key in making the Green Loop accessible, setting a new standard for sustainable, community-focused urban planning.
