Peter Sloman
Peter Sloman
Chief Executive
Reading BC

Peter is currently the Chief Executive of Reading Borough Council, his third Chief Executive role. Reading is the economic hub of the Thames Valley and a fast-growing successful economy, but historic inequalities mean some local people do not benefit from that success. Reading benefits from being close to Heathrow and London with excellent rail links across the country and is the home to many international technology and service companies and a great university. The Council has had challenges in recent years; including its Children Services being under Government intervention but happily they have recently come out of intervention. He has successfully driven the work to deal with severe financial impacts on the Council’s ability to function during the last few years. Peter joined the Council in June 2017 following a successful decade as Chief Executive of Oxford City Council, and prior to that as Chief Executive of High Peak BC. Both of his previous councils achieved Council of the Year. Peter graduated in 1981 in Economics and worked in London as a front-line housing officer and manager dealing with the sharp end of the capital’s homelessness challenges in the 1980s. He has been a local authority Chief Executive for 20 years and a Director for 6 before that. Peter is 60 with a 7-year-old son and a single parent living in Henley. His ambition is to work actively in public service for at least the next decade and use his experience to bring real change to communities and people and to drive innovation in the local government sector. Peter is particularly interested in organisational development; performance improvement; corporate finance and efficiency; regeneration; social housing; community cohesion and customer services.
