John Hooton is Chief Executive at the London Borough of Barnet. He started his career training as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the government and public sector division, looking after a range of clients across local government, the NHS and the charity sector. He moved to The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in 2004, initially as a finance manager, moving on to become assistant director of finance. He joined Barnet Council in 2010 as deputy finance director and became Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive in 2015, overseeing finance and support functions, as well as the commercial and transformation, performance, strategy and governance teams. John became Interim Chief Executive in May 2016 and formally appointed as Chief Executive in February 2017. John has led Barnet through a period which has seen the Children’s Service move from inadequate to good, and seen the Council reshape its relationship with Capita. He has experience of a number of commercial projects, both at Barking and Dagenham and Barnet, as well as financing of major regeneration schemes such as Brent Cross Cricklewood. He is also Chair of Trustees for Live Unlimited, a local Barnet based charity supporting children in care and care leavers.
