John became chief executive of Durham County Council in 2021 having been the council’s Corporate Director of Resources since 2016. Prior to that, John held senior resources and finance positions with South Tyneside Council, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, Durham Constabulary and Cleveland Police. He started out as a YTS with Sedgefield District Council in 1988 John heads an organization employing 16,000 people with gross annual expenditure of £1.519bn. He leads change within the council with a focus on residents and businesses and outcome-focused working. A key priority is economic development and the county has an investment pipeline worth £3.8billion. John also leads Durham’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2025. Events including World Cup cricket, Brass, Durham Book Festival, Kynren and Lumiere - the UK’s largest light festival, have cemented Durham’s reputation for culture and the county has reached the last eight in the competition.
